How many rak'ahs is the tahajjud prayer?
There is no fixed number. It is prayed two rak'ahs at a time and the worshipper stops when they wish. Aisha reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not exceed eleven rak'ahs including witr, whether in Ramadan or outside it. Two rak'ahs prayed consistently are of more value than a large number prayed once.
When does the tahajjud time begin and end?
It begins after the isha prayer and after a period of sleep, and ends when fajr enters. The most virtuous portion is the last third of the night. To find it, take the hours between isha and fajr and divide them into three; the final block is the time referred to in the hadith on the answering of supplication.
Is tahajjud obligatory or voluntary?

Beyond that, supplicate in your own words — the strength of this time lies in what you ask, not in a fixed formula.
Is tahajjud prayed before or after witr?
Witr should be the last prayer of the night. So if you are confident of waking, delay witr until after tahajjud. If you are not confident, pray witr before sleeping — and if you then wake and pray tahajjud, you do not repeat witr, since witr is not prayed twice in one night.

Is there qunut in tahajjud?
Qunut belongs to the witr prayer rather than to tahajjud, in the Hanafi practice. Some other schools recite qunut in the witr of the final part of Ramadan or in times of calamity. Tahajjud itself has no qunut; the supplication comes after the prayer.
