Years of missed prayers feel impossible to repay — until they become a number you attach to each day. What is owed, how to intend it when you have lost count, when not to pray, and the mistakes that make people give up.
A qada prayer is an obligatory prayer performed after its time has passed. A missed fard prayer does not expire and is not written off by the passing of years: it stays a debt until it is prayed. That sounds heavy, and it is — but it is also the reason the debt can always be cleared, however old it is.

Definition
What is a qada prayer?
Qada means to fulfil or discharge. A prayer performed within its own window is ada; the same prayer performed after that window has closed is qada. The prayer itself is identical — the same rak'ahs, the same recitation, the same conditions. Only the intention names it as a make-up.
Two situations are distinguished in fiqh. A prayer missed with an excuse — sleep or genuine forgetfulness — is made up without sin; the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers" (Muslim). A prayer abandoned deliberately is still made up, but with repentance alongside it. In both cases the action is the same: pray it.

Scope
Which prayers are made up?
Prayer
Rak'ahs to make up
Note
Fajr
2 fard
Its sunnah is made up with the fard if prayed before midday.
Dhuhr
4 fard
Sunnah rak'ahs are not made up.
Asr
4 fard

Maghrib
3 fard

Isha

Witr
3 wajib
Wajib in the Hanafi school, so it is made up like the fard.
Prayers missed during menstruation and postnatal bleeding are not made up at all — the obligation is lifted rather than deferred. (Fasts missed for that reason are made up; prayers are not.) Prayers missed while a person was unconscious for an extended period, or before reaching the age of responsibility, are likewise not owed.
Intend the fard of the prayer you are making up — "the fard of the Fajr I missed". If you have lost count, intend "the first Fajr I owe" and keep that same formula every time; each prayer then clears one from the front of the queue.
Pray only the fard rak'ahs.
Two, four, three or four as in the table above — the form is exactly the prayer you already know. The step-by-step salah guide covers each position.
Recite quietly or aloud as normal.
For Fajr, Maghrib and Isha the recitation is aloud when praying alone at night and may be quiet during the day; for Dhuhr and Asr it is quiet. Nothing about the recitation changes because the prayer is a make-up.
Observe the order while the debt is small.
In the Hanafi school, missed prayers are prayed in order as long as fewer than six are owed. Once the debt passes that point, the requirement of order falls away and you may pray them in any sequence.

The debt
Working out what you owe
You are not required to arrive at an exact figure, and trying to is where most people stall. Estimate honestly and lean towards the larger number:
Start from the age of responsibility (puberty), not from birth.
Count the years until you began praying regularly.
Subtract periods within that span when you were praying.
For women, subtract the days of menstruation and postnatal bleeding — roughly six to seven days a month — which are not owed.
Multiply the remaining days by five, and add witr.
The arithmetic here is encouraging. Someone who owes ten years of prayers and makes up five a day — one attached to each prayer on time — clears the debt in ten years while never adding more than about twelve minutes to a day. At ten a day the same debt takes five years.

Attach each make-up to its counterpart on time: after today's Fajr, pray one missed Fajr; after today's Isha, one missed Isha. The habit needs no willpower once it is bound to something you already do.
06
Timing
Times when you should not pray
Qada prayers may be prayed at almost any hour — day or night — with three exceptions, the karahah (disliked) times:
While the sun is rising, until it has risen roughly a spear's length above the horizon (about 40–50 minutes after sunrise).
When the sun is at its zenith, in the short window before Dhuhr enters.
While the sun is setting, in the last minutes before Maghrib.
To know exactly when these windows fall where you are, check your city's prayer times — sunrise, Dhuhr and Maghrib are the three boundaries you need.
07
Pitfalls
Common mistakes
Trying to make up the sunnah prayers too. Only the fard and witr are owed. Adding the sunnahs multiplies the debt by more than two and makes it feel unpayable.
Getting stuck on an exact count. An estimate leaning high is sufficient. Years are lost to the arithmetic that could have been spent praying.
Starting far too fast. Fifty a day for a week, then nothing for a year, clears less than five a day sustained. Pick a number you can keep on a bad day.
Letting today's prayers slip. A make-up plan that costs you prayers on time is running a loss. Today's five come first; the debt is repaid around them.
Despair. The size of the debt is not a verdict. Allah's mercy is not exhausted by ten years of missed prayers, and the person repaying them is, by definition, the person who has already turned back.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which prayers have to be made up?
The five daily obligatory (fard) prayers and the witr prayer, which is wajib in the Hanafi school. Missed fard prayers do not lapse with time — they remain a debt until they are prayed. The sunnah prayers are not made up, with one exception: the sunnah of Fajr is made up together with its fard if both are prayed before midday.
How do I intend a qada prayer when I have lost count?
You do not need an exact date. Intend "the first Fajr I owe" (or "the last Fajr I owe") and use the same formula every time. Each prayer then clears one from the front of the queue, and the intention stays valid without you having to identify a particular day.
Do I have to work out the exact number I owe?
No, and trying to is where most people stop. Estimate: from the age of responsibility to the point you started praying regularly, subtract the periods you were praying, and for women subtract the days of menstruation and postnatal bleeding, during which prayers are not made up at all. Work with the estimate and lean towards the larger figure.
Are there times when qada prayers cannot be prayed?
Yes — the three karahah (disliked) times: while the sun is rising until it has risen a spear's length, when the sun is at its zenith, and while the sun is setting. Outside those windows, qada prayers may be prayed at any time of day or night, including after Fajr and after Asr according to the Hanafi position for make-up prayers.
Can I pray several qada prayers one after another?
Yes. Many people pray one of each missed prayer alongside its counterpart on time, which adds five prayers to the day and is sustainable for years. Praying several in one sitting is also valid — just renew the intention for each one.
Does a woman make up prayers missed during menstruation?
No. Prayers missed during menstruation and postnatal bleeding are not made up — the obligation is lifted, not deferred. Fasts missed in Ramadan for the same reason are made up, but prayers are not. This is a point of agreement across the schools.
Should I pray qada or extra voluntary prayers first?
Clearing the obligation comes before adding voluntary prayers. If you owe qada prayers, the time you would give to extra nafl is better spent on the debt — with the exception of the emphasised sunnahs attached to the daily prayers, which the majority continue to pray.
What if I die before finishing my qada prayers?
Where a person was unable to complete them, the heirs may pay fidya from the estate for the outstanding prayers if the deceased left a bequest to that effect — this is the Hanafi position. It is a last resort for what could not be prayed, never a substitute chosen while a person is able to pray.
