How many rak'ahs is the Jumu'ah prayer?
The obligatory part is two rak'ahs, prayed in congregation behind the imam after the khutbah. Around it are the sunnah prayers: in the Hanafi practice four rak'ahs before, four after, then zuhr al-akhir and two closing rak'ahs. Only the two fard rak'ahs are obligatory; they replace zuhr for that day.
Who is required to attend Jumu'ah?
It is obligatory on adult, sane, resident Muslim men who are able to attend. The classical exemptions are travellers, the sick, those caring for the sick, and anyone for whom attendance would cause genuine hardship. Women are not obliged to attend but may do so and their attendance is valid.
What time is the Jumu'ah prayer?
Its window is the same as zuhr — from when the sun passes its zenith until the asr time begins. In practice mosques begin the khutbah shortly after the zuhr adhan and pray a little later. Exact times vary by city and season; check the prayer times for your own location.
What if I miss the Jumu'ah prayer?
Jumu'ah cannot be made up as Jumu'ah, because congregation is a condition of it. Someone who misses it prays zuhr — four rak'ahs — instead. If you arrive and catch the imam even in the final rak'ah, in the Hanafi view you have caught the Jumu'ah and complete the remaining rak'ah after the imam's salam.
May I talk during the khutbah?
No. The hadith is explicit: saying even 'be quiet' to someone talking during the khutbah is itself idle speech. In the Hanafi school listening to the khutbah is a condition of the prayer's validity. Phones should be silenced and greetings postponed until after the salam.
Which surah is recommended on Friday?
Surah al-Kahf. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever reads it on Friday will have light between the two Fridays. Sending abundant salawat upon the Prophet is likewise emphasised on this day, as Friday is described as the best day on which the sun rises.
Is ghusl obligatory before Jumu'ah?
The majority of scholars hold it to be a strongly emphasised sunnah rather than an obligation; a minority considered it obligatory given the strength of the wording in the hadith. In practice: bathing, clean clothes and perfume before the Friday gathering are part of its etiquette and should not be skipped without reason.
What is zuhr al-akhir and why is it prayed?
Zuhr al-akhir ('the last zuhr') is four rak'ahs prayed after Jumu'ah as a precaution, in case a condition of the Jumu'ah was not met — for instance a doubt about whether the congregation was valid. It is a Hanafi practice rooted in caution rather than an obligation, and it is not observed in every school.
Is trading forbidden during the Jumu'ah call?
The Quran instructs believers to leave off trade and hasten to the remembrance of Allah when the call to Friday prayer is made (al-Jumu'ah 62:9). This applies to those obliged to attend, during the time of the prayer. Once the prayer is over, the same passage explicitly permits dispersing and seeking livelihood again.
Can women attend Jumu'ah?
Yes. Attendance is not obligatory upon women, but it is permitted and their prayer is valid; if a woman attends and prays with the congregation, that suffices for her zuhr. A woman who does not attend prays zuhr as usual.
Is fasting on Friday recommended?
Singling out Friday for a voluntary fast is discouraged in the hadith — it should be joined to Thursday or Saturday. This does not apply to obligatory fasts, make-up fasts, or Ramadan, and it does not apply if Friday happens to fall within a fast you were already keeping.
When is the hour of accepted supplication on Friday?
A hadith mentions an hour on Friday in which supplication is answered. Its exact timing was not specified; the two most-cited views are the period while the imam sits between the two parts of the khutbah until the prayer ends, and the last hour before maghrib. Many keep supplicating through the late afternoon for this reason.
